Detail of woman recyling. |

Random People Continued, October 2008
Hopefully this isn't considered insensitive. She definitely didn't realize I was snapping her photo. I have seen this woman culling the recyclables many times as I walk the blocks near One Liberty Plaza. The manner in which she does her work is interesting. While I am sure she would rather be somewhere else, she goes about her work with confidence and diligence.

Smokers at work make pretty good models. They'll stand in the same spot for a good four or five minutes, which allows me to work up a sketch and sometimes grab a photo. |

Random People, September 2008
Carrying around a sketchbook has become part of my daily routine. I usually just jot down rough sketches and/or grab a digital photo. The riders on the subway are my favorite subject, but I often see people on the street that are just as interesting.

I liked the scene so much I went back the next day and painted the same scene. |

Kingstree Grain Distributor, July 2008
This is a small study painting (7x11) painted on site. Technically, I am not sure what this place is called, but it's across the street from my sister's place and I have been a fan of it for a few years now (View painting from fall 2005). However I have always thought of these buildings as being 'grain distributors.' This one is near my sister's place in Kingstree, S.C. Painting near home is great. Besides the fresh air, I appreciate the change in scenery.

From the Ground Up, November 2007
From the Ground Up isn't going to displace anything Van Gogh sneezed on from the most expensive painting ever sold category, but it is an 'award-winning' painting, having won the Agnes Bossu Pirnat Memorial Award in the 32nd Annual Juried Exhibition of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America.

Not a Construction Guy, but definitely could have passed for one.

Work Sketches , Ongoing
As a compliment to the construction site work I have been building, I started keeping thumbnail sketches of the people who attend the different meeting we have in our office. Of course I am paying attention to the meetings, but a long the way I grab a few one or two minute gesture sketches. The project has been building now for a few months and is making a dent in the free space I have on my wall. Luckily no one has really noticed, because the subjects are generally your construction project managers that I don't see being very pro-model. That said, I haven't sketched too many people that were volunteering to pose.

WTC Site March 2005 |

WTC Site, February 23, 2008
I've spent quite a few years now working in 130 Liberty (nearly five), which is across the street from the World Trade Center site. As I've mentioned before, working this close to the site definitely has influenced my work. From this vantage point, you can can see everything going on and its easy to realize why this isn't a normal construction site.
In the earlier painting on March 12, 2005, which was just prior to real activity starting at the site, it probably doesn't look like that much has changed. I won't go into all the differences between the two, but they are definitely there.

Thailand, Winter Holiday
I spent almost three weeks in Thailand December 18 - January 9. Of course it wasn't enough time to see everything, but I did get to see a good variety of the country. It was a really great trip and I hope to make it back someday. There was a nice diversity between Bangkok, the islands, and the northern part of the country. I spent a lot of the time switching between my camera and sketch books (I carried two). I posted a lot more images on my flickr account, click here to view.
